Since augmented reality is still so new, we run into a lot of folks who have no idea what we’re talking about when we mention it. While there are plenty of examples on YouTube, we thought it would be more fun to make our own demo⏤so we brought our space parakeet to life to provide our friends with a small taste of AR.
To check out our AR app you’ll need to:
Download the ParaSight app from the Google Play Store on any Android device
Grab a Paracosm logo from either our T-Shirt, one you've printed out, or this one on screen.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, simply open it up, and point the camera at our logo to see our little space explorer flying around in another dimension. You can snap a selfie with AR Budige or take a picture of him flying solo. We'd love to see your photos, so be sure to use #ARselfie or tag @Paracosm3D when you share them.
Andrew, our courageous intern, created this app using Qualcomm's Vuforia ARtoolkit and programmed our logo to be the “marker” which summons Budgie. The animation was created in Blender (a free open source 3D graphics and animation program) by one of our 3D artists (thanks, Duncan!), and we packaged it all up in an app. (Hang in there, Apple people! We’re looking into making an iOS version too.)
While the ParaSight app isn't directly tied to our technology, it's a great example of simple AR. Most of today’s augmented reality technology relies on markers to work. Paracosm is taking AR beyond markers and using our 3D maps to create immersive experiences grounded in real-world environments.
