Paracosm was founded in January of 2013 in Gainesville, Florida after Amir Rubin awoke in the middle of night with an idea to map the entire world in 3D. He called up the smartest people he knew, and together they formed Paracosm.
In our early days, Paracosm served as a development partner for Google’s Project Tango — the world’s first 3D-sensing smartphone. In 2014, we closed a 3.3M seed round led by Accomplice and became iRobot’s first official investment.
After mastering what was possible with low-cost 3D sensors, we decided to add LiDAR into the mix. We integrated Velodyne’s VLP-16 and never looked back. With it, we built PX-80: the world’s first mobile LiDAR scanner that produces color data.
In 2017, we caught Occipital’s eye. They acquired Paracosm and now we operate as a proud division of Occipital, Inc.
We take initiative to understand ourselves and the world around us. • We work continuously to improve ourselves. • We frame risk and failure as essential to growth. • We experiment in order to add value to the team and the world.
We’re accountable for our commitments and for the success of the whole. • We actively share intentions and information. • We invite passionate debate, we respect decision-makers, and we move forward together. • We’re mindful and candid in communication and action.
We strive for balance in work, life and play. • We bring wonder, curiosity, and enthusiasm • We freely give and ask for help. • We are fully engaged and support that in each other.
We value a healthy work/life balance, making important decisions together, good food, healthy communication, puns, lifelong learning, and the importance of play. We believe in field trips, karaoke, and magic.
